“IF” follows Bea, a teenager who believed she had long left behind the imaginary friends of her childhood. Bea discovers she can see everyone’s imaginary friends and embarks on an adventure with Cal (Ryan Reynolds) to remind adults of the memories they’ve left behind.
“It reminds me of the movies I loved as a kid. They were films that touched on somewhat complex and emotional themes but never lost their sense of comedy. They were still great fun, but also the kind that moved us and made us feel. That’s what I think makes this movie so special,”
says lead actor Ryan Reynolds.
However, although IF dives headfirst into the world of childhood imagination, its ambitious narrative strives to connect all the dots, and it does so very well.
Origin of IF
At the film’s premiere in London, John Krasinski revealed that he made the film for his daughters.
“It was a thousand percent for my daughters. I always wanted to make a movie for them and spent many years watching them enter this magical world where parents aren’t invited. And I saw the joy they had in that world.”
“Then the Covid pandemic hit, and they became less excited and were playing fewer imaginary games. I just thought it was the right time to tell them that no matter what happens, they can always return to that imaginary world they created.”
