Animals is Netflix’s new thriller starring and directed by Ben Affleck. Set to premiere on October 9, 2026, the movie follows a family whose seemingly perfect life begins to fall apart after the son of a Los Angeles mayoral candidate is kidnapped.
Starring Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington in the lead roles, Animals combines family drama, political tension, and a desperate race against time. The movie also explores how far someone is willing to go when their own family is in danger.
What Is Animals About?
The story follows Mark Kimball, a successful politician who is campaigning to become the mayor of Los Angeles. From the outside, his life appears to be under control. He has a promising career, a stable family, and is getting closer to achieving his political goals. However, everything changes when his son, Denny, is kidnapped.
Mark and his wife, Abigail, receive a threat and must find a way to raise the ransom money before it is too late. From that moment on, the couple enters a race against time while making increasingly dangerous decisions. At the same time, Mark’s political campaign, his marriage, and everything they have built together begin to fall apart.
A Kidnapping That Puts Everything at Risk
Denny’s disappearance completely changes Mark and Abigail’s lives. As they try to follow the kidnappers’ demands, they must decide who they can trust. Meanwhile, secrets and conflicts begin to come to the surface. Mark is in the middle of an important political campaign. Therefore, every decision he makes can have both personal and public consequences. Abigail, meanwhile, must deal with the fear of losing her son while trying to prevent the situation from spiraling even further out of control.
Because of this, Animals uses the kidnapping as a starting point to explore trust, power, family, and the moral limits of its characters.
Politics and Family Collide in Animals
One of the main elements of the movie is the connection between Mark Kimball’s political life and his family reality. As a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles, Mark has carefully built his public image. However, the kidnapping puts that image under enormous pressure. As he is forced to make increasingly risky decisions, the difference between what he shows the public and what happens inside his home becomes more visible. Therefore, the thriller is not only about finding the missing child. The story also examines the price of power and how far someone is willing to go to protect what matters most.
