Everyone needs a good laugh here and there and one genre which is not as popular as before but still has plenty of following are the sitcom eras of the 90’s . These series have such a strong following that they are still highly coveted by major streaming platforms .

The recent streaming platforms explosion has resulted in a renaissance in classic TV shows from different eras . One such of which is the 1990s sitcom era. Below are some of the most popular classic series you can find on some of the most popular streaming platforms today.

 FRASIER ( PARAMOUNT+ )

One of the longest running sitcoms in television history Frasier’s episodes revolve around Dr. Frasier Crane, a successful Boston therapist who moves to Seattle to get a new start on life; he is also talk show radio host, which he uses to relay his wit and wisdom to others, but at times he struggles with everyday problems such as co-workers and family problems. The show follows a similar theme as Seinfeld and other shows of the same area focusing on episodes that don’t necessarily tie in to each other .

The sitcom Cheers is definitely a series that cannot be ignored as it still has many fans to this day. The season finale, for example, is still one of the most watched episodes in TV history. The plot focused on a bar called Cheers, where a group of acquaintances would meet to drink, complain, bring crazy stories and tell jokes. Though most of the series took place in the 1980s it set the mold for future TV shows that were released in the 1990s some of which we discuss below.

Freaks and Geeks ( HULU )

One of the most influential productions with a cult following in history, Freaks and Geeks managed to make their mark with just only 18 episodes ever having aired. In a sarcastic high school setting, the protagonist is Lindsay, a young woman radically changing her style after her grandmother’s death. The show featured several future stars including James Franco (The Interview), Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), Seth Rogen (Unlikely Couple) and Linda Cardellini (Bloodline).

Friends ( HBOMAX )

The famous story of the six friends who lived in New York has a deep history and the long duration of the show allows ( 10 years ) its fans to see a decades long evolution of the characters. This series has recently came back to light as they had a reunion special on HBOMAX which reignited the buzz behind the classic show .

The main characters Ross (David Schwimmer), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox) are some of the funniest in television history .  The episodes themes  range from , marriage, employment, pregnancy apartment hunting , but above all  friendship and perseverance being the main theme.

Ellen ( Apple TV+ )

Before being a successful game show host and star, Ellen DeGeneres had her own sitcom series which, unlike most sitcoms, was completely driven by a single character. In this sitcom , Ellen was an eccentric owner of a book store with funny friends. In probably one of the most iconic episodes in sitcom history “The Puppy ” episode the network wanted the focus of the episode to be Ellen adopting a dog, however as the actress was dissatisfied with the character’s lack of romantic relationships in the show Ellen took advantage of this episode and announced herself as being a lesbian on stage something with at that time was unheard of that began the explosion in the show and Ellen’s popularity .

Blossom ( HULU )

Before we met Mayim Bialik as the Amy of The Big Bang Theory, the actress was the star of Blossom. The comedy followed a precocious teenager, after whom the show was named, and became an icon of a “clumsy girl” with her exotic clothes and her big, clumsy hats. The show also brought new perspectives on controversial issues at the time, such as a friend of Blossom’s getting involved with an older, married man and the teenager’s first menstruation. Many of Blossom’s themes are universal and can be watched by today’s teenagers and adult parents who grew up watching the show.

SEINFELD ( NETFLIX )

“Seinfeld” stars Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, and Jerry Seinfeld as a group of quirky friends living in New York City. The group of friends constantly finds themselves in awkward yet funny situations . Each episode has a theme independent from the rest and does not necessarily carry over to other episodes. Seinfeld is still one of the most watched television programs either over the air or streaming of all time. It is syndicated in almost every country in various different languages.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (HULU)

The series tells the story of Will (Will Smith), a humble young man from Philadelphia who moves to a luxurious California neighborhood. where he lives with his sister Vivian (Janet Hubert-Whitten) and his brother-in-law Philip (James Avery), a lawyer who became a judge and has a very successful life. Every episode has a different life learning lesson which shows Will growing up more and more in after each season .
