The continuation of the beloved animated series about mutants is now streaming and has been warmly received by fans worldwide.

X-Men ’97 premiered on Disney+ on March 20th with the important mission of continuing the iconic 90s cartoon, as well as being the first X-Men production by Marvel Studios.

The gamble paid off, with the series becoming the most-watched animation in Disney+ streaming history since What If…?, according to the company.

LAUNCH SUCCESS

There were over 4 million views in the first five days after the launch, according to Disney+, highlighting the audience’s enthusiasm for the mutants’ return. This extremely positive reception was already anticipated, with the first episodes of the animation receiving very favorable reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has an average approval rating of 100%, a perfect and quite rare score on the site.

WHAT IS X-MEN ’97 ABOUT?

Created by Beau DeMayo (Moon Knight), the new animated series picks up right where the original series, which aired from 1992 to 1997, left off, showing the team of mutants dealing with the absence of their mentor, Charles Xavier. Not knowing how to continue his legacy, the group discovers that Professor X has passed the responsibility to his old friend and sometimes enemy, Magneto, who now leads the mutants.

In addition to the usual confrontations between heroes and villains, the series addresses the mutants’ everyday challenges, as they face prejudice and intolerance from humans.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS OF X-MEN ’97

“X-Men ’97” revisits the iconic era of the 90s, when the X-Men, a group of mutants who use their extraordinary gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a new dangerous and unexpected future.

X-MEN ’97 CHARACTERS

The team includes some of the most well-known mutants from the comics, such as Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, Storm, Jubilee, Morph, Bishop, Nightcrawler, and Beast.

UPCOMING MARVEL ANIMATIONS

The success of X-Men ’97 may inspire Marvel Studios to revive more animations that were iconic in the 90s. According to insider Alex Perez, the studio is considering exploring more of these shows, like The Incredible Hulk and Fantastic Four, which shared the same universe as the X-Men animated series in the 90s.

One of the most likely animations to receive a sequel is Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which ended with a big cliffhanger and had several crossover episodes with the mutants. A continuation in the style of X-Men ’97 would make perfect sense and could solve one of the biggest mysteries of the classic cartoon.

X-Men ’97 releases new episodes every Wednesday.
