When Does House of the Dragon Season 2 Premiere?

House of the Dragon Season 2 premieres on June 16th.

What’s the Connection Between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones?

While Game of Thrones is set years after the beginning of the Baratheon reign, House of the Dragon brings the Targaryen ancestors starting with King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), long before the dragons were extinct. This was the last reign in Westeros considered peaceful.

House of the Dragon has already approached the fame of its predecessor: the last episode of the first season drew 9.3 million viewers in the United States alone.

What to Expect from House of the Dragon Season 2?

Written by George R. R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series—which inspired Game of Thrones — House of the Dragon has brought high expectations. The story will focus on the struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros.

At CCXP 2023, actor Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen) stated:

“In the first season, we got to know a lot about the two families, all in an absurdly tense atmosphere that made it easy to spill blood. Whether we like it or not, Aemond was the first to do that (…) Mark my words: in the second season, it’s no longer tension. We are at war.”

On the other hand, Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) also commented that the series will bring more action and war scenes.

“You know, I can’t say much, but I can reveal that we will definitely have more dragons, and they are more agile, bigger, and in epic scenes. We also have a perfect filming set; I can say that my character’s ship is incredible.”

Will House of the Dragon Have a Third Season?

George R. R. Martin, the saga’s author, stated that the creation of the third and fourth seasons is already underway, in an interview with Variety.

He also said that he spent two days discussing the third and fourth seasons with the series’ director, Ryan Condal, and the writing team.

All must choose! Understand the Rivalry Between the Two Sides

SPOILER ALERT! The Green and the Black are in conflict, led by Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively, for the succession of the Iron Throne after King Viserys’s death.

The friendship between the two is shattered by their distinct traditions and destinies, turning into rivalry after Alicent marries King Viserys I, Rhaenyra’s father. Thus, Viserys and Alicent were husband and wife, king and queen, and Rhaenyra, who was a friend, became a stepdaughter.

Alicent always “followed the script”: she married the king as a virgin, was always faithful, and had legitimate sons with him, who met almost all the criteria to be heirs to the throne. The main candidate was Aegon II Targaryen.

On the other hand, Rhaenyra was the daring young woman who, before marrying, had an affair with her own uncle and with a member of the Blacks, having three children with him, all with the same hair color. However, she was considered for the throne as the eldest daughter of King Viserys, while Alicent wanted her son, Aegon, to be the heir.

Alicent tried to accept the reality until King Viserys, in his final moments of life and looking like a zombie extra from “The Walking Dead,” decided to talk about Aegon to his wife. Thus, even though his words weren’t clear, it was enough for Alicent to understand what she wanted to: No crown for Rhaenyra! Aegon is the successor.
